In an official press release, CNN
announced its partnership with the Empire
State building in New York that would bring color to this year’s US Presidential Election by displaying
the election results on the towering building through the use of LED lights.
In this case, a scrolling LED
sign display of the result has been ousted as one creative means of proclaiming
such pivotal news not only to New Yorkers but for the rest of the country and
the world as well.
CNN has been innovating in the
way they deliver news particular when it comes to the elections. Back in 2008,
the news station made use of holograms to get in touch of reports and anchors
in a different state to still be able to deliver election updates and news as
it happens. Here is a video of CNN’s hologram reporting 4 years ago.
The upright LED-illuminated meter
will be placed on the spire of the historic Empire State
building as it provides the actual counts for the race to 270 electoral votes.
Presidential candidates Barack Obama and Mitt Romney each get a color that
generally signifies the political party they represent. The blue lighted bar
will represent President Obama’s electoral votes while the red one will be for
Republican presidential candidate Governor Romney.
The use of programmable LED sign on the Empire State
Building also marks the
debut of the newly installed LED panel technology of the famous structure. This
cutting-edge lighting fixture is by Philips Color Kinetics. On election night,
the building will carry the patriotic shades of red, white and blue. Once CNN
has made a projection as to the winner of this year’s presidential election,
the tower will carry a single color, either red or blue depending on the
projected winner.
Standing tall and proud at 1,454
feet above Midtown Manhattan, the Empire
State Building
is certainly a sight to see. This “World’s Most Famous
Office Building ”
has been a witness to many significant events with its tower lights. The
lighting tradition in recognition of milestones and holidays to name a few
began in 1932.
Is the LED technology
a versatile tool? What do you think of this lighting innovation?
