Follow these tips to save power this pumpkin season.
Summer has been fun; now it’s almost time to transition to a cooler, crisp breeze, crunchy leaves, and apples. As you get ready for pumpkin and turkey season, you should also take into consideration your power usage at home and in the office. Staying warm requires a change in how you consume energy, so here are some tips that you can follow to save power and avoid burning a hole in your pocket.
Make the switch to LED.
We all know that light-emitting diodes are eco-friendly and energy-saving. It becomes much darker in fall, so that means your lights at home and the office are turned on for more extended hours, compared to summer. To save energy, replace all your traditional lighting with LED. LEDs are also known to last significantly longer than fluorescent and incandescent bulbs. The same goes for your shop’s signs; swap your old neon sign with a safer and more efficient LED open sign.
Utilize natural heat.
Do not let the heat escape by opening your windows, so having blinds or curtains is necessary. During the daytime, open your blinds and curtains to let the sunshine through your home or office. At night time, make sure to close them to keep the heat inside. As for spaces surrounded by trees, always keep your blinds or curtains closed to lock in the heat.
Turn your thermostat at 68 degrees or below.
Turn your thermostat down to 10 to 15 degrees before you leave the house or office then turn it back to your normal temperature when you get back. Doing so will allow you to save about 10 percent on your heating costs because your HVAC doesn’t work as hard has it would normally do.
Regularly check your HVAC filter.
Make it a habit to check your HVAC filter for dust, debris, and dirt. If your filter is clogged up with these, it needs to get replaced as soon as possible to prevent obstructed airflow. When air doesn’t flow properly, it puts a strain on your HVAC, and it will struggle to heat or cool. That is why you should not forget to check the filter about once a month to make sure that your HVAC is able to heat or cool properly.
Reverse the spin of your fans.
Lastly, if you have a ceiling fan at home, you can reverse the spin to keep you warm. Doing so will push warm air back down, instead of pushing it up. It can also disperse the heat coming from your HVAC which will then fill the whole room with warm air.
