Neon versus LED Signs: Which one should you choose?

Make the right choice when deciding between advertising options for your establishment.

When the time comes for you to pick out your business’ signage, you have to make sure that the advertising solution you choose fulfills your needs. In today’s market, two of the most popular options are neon and LED signs. While they may look similar at first glance, there are key differences between the two that would make your selection process a lot easier.

If you’re deciding between neon or LED open signs, better read this article first.

Energy consumption

In terms of energy consumption, LED sign bulbs require very little power. Depending on the color, an LED bulb may only require 1.7 up to 4.0 volts per bulb. In contrast, neon bulbs normally need 90 - 115 volts but may go up to a whopping 15,000 volts to run.

Expensive electricity charges can put a dent in one’s savings, so it’s only wise to go with the more energy-efficient option.

Safety and durability

Neon uses real glass tubings, and while this has been in practice for so long, its high voltage consumption can leave its glass parts vulnerable to breaking. This can be dangerous as noxious gases like mercury are present in neon. On the other hand, LEDs are much more durable, and because they don’t contain harmful materials, they are safer to use and dispose of.

Flexibility

As a much older form of outdoor advertising, neon signs can be static and, therefore, not advisable for use when signages need to be updated regularly. This can easily be accomplished by programmable LED signs that come with software and remote control, which gives you complete handle over your advertisements.

Visibility and aesthetics

While neon emits a warm glow, LED is brighter and remains visible at a far greater distance. In terms of aesthetics, neon is a favorite of many for its nostalgic and familiar look. However, there are now LED signs that can mimic the look of neon.

Upkeep

In terms of maintenance, neon signs require regular refilling of neon gasses to keep it continually operating. Likewise, their glass tubings may need regular check-ups, especially during colder months, to prevent cracking. In the case of LED, because its light-emitting diodes are wrapped in protective polymer jackets, they are much more sturdy and require less upkeep.

Cost

There’s not much difference in price points between neon and LED signs, but taking into account all the previously-mentioned factors, looks like choosing LED is the better option for those still deciding between these two popular options
