In the world of interior design and architecture, color is a powerful tool that can set the mood and atmosphere of a space. You will probably be familiar with this idea already, but what you may not know is that there are specific colors that are associated with particular emotions.

In this article, we will look at how color psychology can be used to create an impactful mood lighting scheme in your home or office. From there, you can make the right choices based on your intended moods when shopping for lighting such as LED light strips.

And while we’ll be focusing on choosing the right color for effective mood lighting, you can also use the same principles when deciding which text color to pick for your programmable LED signs, so stay put to learn more.

All about color psychology (or how different hues can affect different moods)

There’s no question about it: colors affect the human brain in ways that can alter our mood and behavior. Color psychology makes sense of it all as it is the study of how colors affect our emotions, behavior, and physical well-being.

How we interpret their meanings is shaped by several factors. Often, it is ingrained through one’s culture as societies all over will assign meanings to certain colors during their celebrations. But it turns out that the meaning we assign to colors involves biological triggers as well

Ever wondered why blue gives you a sense of calm while red gives off energy and a sense of danger? It turns out there’s a physiological explanation for this. Studies have shown that red does increase one’s heart rate while blue slows it.

These assigned meanings then take on and shape daily discourse. We can see its application in advertising where a brand’s choice of color and imagery is decided so that it reflects the perception they want the public to form. (As an exercise, keep your eyes peeled the next time you go out and form impressions with the ads you see on programmable LED screens and billboards).

Meanwhile, in interior design, colors are carefully chosen to create a sense of mood in your home, to create a soothing environment for the family, or even to help improve focus and productivity.

Now, let’s look at some colors and the different effects and perceptions they convey to us. After this, you can pick and choose the right colored LED light strips to achieve your chosen mood.

Green

The color green has a long history of being associated with nature and is one of the most common colors used in nature-related activities, such as sports and gardening. The color green is also associated with money and wealth, which may be why it is perceived as a positive attribute in some cultures.

The color green has been shown to have a calming effect on humans, helping the participants in a study feel relaxed, calm, and happy. Green also makes people more open to new experiences since it stimulates the brain's reward center.

Blue

You may already know that blue is the color of the sky and water. It's associated with openness, space, relaxation, and calmness.

Blue can also be associated with sadness or melancholy. Consider the association of the color to depression or low mood periods where one who is experiencing it is described as someone “feeling the blues.” This triggers an emotional response when we see the color blue which many times can lead us to feel sad or melancholy.

However, despite its associations with sadness and gloominess, blue is often used in institutions where trustworthiness is a valued trait: Studies show that people who work in rooms painted blue tend to have higher levels of productivity.

Orange

The color orange is perceived as warm and friendly by most people. It also has a strong physical effect on people and stimulates hunger pangs, which makes it an excellent choice for restaurant menus or other places where food is sold. Orange is also often associated with wealth because of its connection to gold, which is often used as a symbol of luxury and extravagance.

People also tend to associate orange with being fun-loving and energetic, which makes it a great choice for sports teams or other organizations that want to convey this message about themselves to their audience.

Red

Red is the color of fire and blood, so it’s no surprise that it’s a symbol of energy and passion. Red is associated with love and romance, but also with violence and danger. It’s easy to see why red is often associated with stop signs.

The science behind red in lighting: Red stimulates the nervous system by increasing our heart rate, respiration, and blood pressure. This can make us feel wide awake or energized if we are tired, giving us enough boost to get through our day without feeling exhausted at the end of it.

Yellow

Yellow is the color of sunshine and happiness. It's a warm and sunny color that brings to mind summer days and sunshine. Yellow is used to symbolize energy, optimism, happiness, and joy. Yellow also symbolizes intellect, confidence, curiosity, and creativity.

In other settings, yellow is the color used associated with warnings. Because it’s a color that pops, yellow is often used as a warning color in traffic signs because it attracts attention more quickly than other colors like red or green do.

Purple

The color purple is a combination of red and blue. The color purple has been associated with royalty and wealth for thousands of years.

Purple is a color that often evokes strong emotions because it stimulates the imagination. Purple is also a peace-loving color, and people who love purple tend to be spiritual and sensitive.

It has also been associated with spirituality, creativity, and wisdom. The color purple is associated with the crown chakra which is located at the top of the head. The crown chakra represents our connection to our higher self and spiritual guidance.

Deciding which color is best to covey your intended mood is always up to you.

Choosing colors according to their psychological effects can help you achieve this goal. Understanding the meaning behind each individual color will allow you to make more informed decisions about what colors should be used for specific purposes, as well as how they may interact with each other in terms of creating certain moods or feelings in your environment.
